Depends on what you like:

I started out "back in the day" with "Nina Kimberley," "Taken Liberty," and "Brave Men Run."

Lafferty's "Playing for Keeps" is very good.

Lenahan's "Shadow Magic."

Sigler's "The Rookie" is ostensibly about football but cool anyway.

Hutchins' "7th Son" trilogy is good. Start with book 1. ;)

AF Harold's "Strange Education of Epitome Quarkstandard" is a fav - if more than a little strange.

Paul Jenkins' "Plitone Revisionist" is very nice, too.

"Tom Corven" was a good story.

oh and I just finished "65 Below" from Basil Sands. Excellent! But too short. (hint)

Others will weigh in on "good listening" i'm sure.

I've left off more than I've listed, but with nearly 200 titles ...

It's matter of taste, as Nathan said.

My First was Nina Kimberly.

For SciFi people: Try "Quater Share" which is good, it's part of a series, the next two are, Half and Full.

I don't know where to place "Billibub Baddings and the Case of the Singing Sword".

You can Try the First chapter, you'll find out if its to your taste.

I can't believe that I forgot Billibub. Tee did a fantastic job with that one.

Shameless self-promotion here. I think The Failed Cities Monologues by Matt Wallace is an excellent podiobook. Of course, I'm partial to it because I produced it. Note: I'm not the writer.

I agree with everything that Nathan pointed out. I would also add:
All of the Scott Sigler books
Decoder Ring Theatre
A Different Point of View
Crescent
The Heaven series
Jack Wakes Up
Morevi
Murder at Avedon Hill

I'm sure I missed a few.

Listen to this man.

Scott Sigler is the master. In fact, check this out.
All of his stuff is great.

Playing For Keeps is good, as is 65 Below and Shadowmagic. Serve is Cold by Ronnie Blackwell is AMAZING.

Hope this helped.

Look up Joe Cottonwood's podiobook. An absolute delight, and very well executed!

I've listened to the majority of the titles on Podiobooks and there are a number of very memorable ones. I've come to really enjoy the epics, but the best thing to do is listen. There exists a wide variety of production methods, from the audio drama with complete cast like Murder at Avedon Hill (PG Holyfield) which are excellent, to the single reader, with our without voices. Sometimes, a readers voice can take some time to get used to like Capital Coven which is actually very good once it gets rolling. Really kid friendly podcasts like The Trolls of Lake Maebiewahnapoopie, A Long November, and Collapse at Hidden Verse 332 are good, but the best kid friendly one I've listened to is Shadowmagic (also mentioned here). If you're a Star Wars fan, A Different Point of View is almost required listening. If you like sarcastic humor Greg Crites (Duncan the Vampire Slayer) is great. If you like British humor, accents, and writing, anything by Mike Bennett, The Corridor, and How to Disappear Completely. There are a lot of good ones out there. The big ones, like Sigler, Hutchins, and the like. Go for it... Start listening and fine what you like.

Letter from China is an absolute delight. If anybody likes my writing - or Nathan Lowell's - you'll like this guy's wide-eyed, warm-hearted adventure teaching English in Beijing. He had me laughing out loud. And crying. Great podcast.

Joe, I gotta say, your book Clearheart, was just terrific...I generally go for the S.F., and yet, somehow, I downloaded your book (maybe it was the 3, 421 folks recommending it...) and that first little bit, with him hanging off the roof, nail thru his hand/wrist, I had a WTF? moment, (what, no spaceships?!) but, was captivated almost immediately. It was very funny, poignant, well-narrated, and thoroughly a great listen.
Thank you!

Lightly.

Wow, thanks. You might try Letter from China. No spaceships, but it's almost another planet...

Regarding Letter from China: This may be a difference in expectations between the author and me, but I felt that the culture shock the author experienced - or at least the way he described it - was somewhat exaggerated?

My first was Phil Rossi's Crescent Station, which was extremely creepy in a good way - and J. C. Huthins' 7th Son, which I liked.
The ones I really got into were
* the books by Nathan Lowell
* The brilliant Black Jack Justice Series, which I reviewed
* P. G. Holyfield: Murder at Avedon Hill
* Terry Fallis: The Best Laid Plans
* Tee Morris: Billibub Baddings - the case of the singing sword.
Also, a rather odd, but interesting listen is Mike Bennett: One among the sleepless.
